Cover your back - Information security seminar 11.11.2008

Deltagon held the second part of the seminar series of autumn 2008 together with nSense Ltd. Seminar offered information on how to cover your back and protect your business from leaks of confidential information.

Seminar handled common problems in information protection and theft prevention and also showed practical examples of good procedures. This seminar was a part of a seminar series that among others things deals with up-to-date information, challenges of confidentiality in e-mail messaging, offers solutions and presents useful procedures.

Are you safe?

CEO Jonas Lundberg from nSense Ltd said that the amount of critical vulnerability this year increased 28 %. During years 2005-2007 the amount of Web attacks increased 540 % and the new attacks are carefully targeted and they are being used to gather information. Most data system break-ins are done through Web applications, because it is easy.

- Information security is a broad concept; know what you don't know about information security, Jonas Lundberg from nSense challenged the people working amongst information security. Companies should cover their backs especially when Web applications are concerned. Make sure that your organization has the right roles and responsibilities in respect of information security, Lundberg continued. He also calls for ensuring that there is a workable, implemented information security process in use. Safe and secure systems and applications will not come if they are not intentionally produced. It is also important to develop your own skills and train others.

Are you securing confidentiality in communication?

The information security issue cannot be made meaningful without identifying the information that needs protection and the threats it faces.

- What's the organization's confidential information and how it should be handled, must be defined in information security policy. It is substantial, of course, that users can be given method of how to act properly - not just say that something should not be done, said Chief Operating Officer Juha Lappi from Deltagon Group Corporation.

The key challenges of security solutions in e-mail communication are the implementation, scalability, maintenance, continuity and usability. When choosing different security solutions it is important to strike a balance between security requirements and usability.

Practical aspect

In the Local Insurance Group (Lähivakuutus) information security plays a central part in everyday interactions with customers. Information Security Manager Leo Niemelä's speech showed that in the Local Insurance Group e-mail encryption is a part of everyday life.
