Sweden did it after all
26. June 2008
Swedish parliament has adopted a controversial law, according to which the country's National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA) is to be given the right to control all the country's cross-border electronic communications. Including e-mail, phone calls, faxes, instant messages and VoIP phone calls.
According to the newspapers Sweden is interested in the traffic from east, most of which travels via Sweden. This is awkward because a significant part of Finland's traffic passes via Sweden. The Swedish FRA's employees can therefore virtually read almost all of Finland's e-mail that passes the borders, including attachments.
Issue has had extensive visibility in the Finnish media. We have gathered together some interesting links (in Finnish).
With secure e-mail a firm does not have to worry about where servers are located and who may be watching them. Protecting the content of the message is the only way to prevent secret or embarrassing information from falling into the hands of third parties.
